Subscriber Ogg Vorbis Page

Hi here are a few things about the .ogg format including how to use it on your computer or media player and why it is that we at GGE have chosen it as our preferred downloading format.

What is Ogg Vorbis?

Ogg Vorbis is part of an Ancient ongoing compression project supported by the Xiph foundation . It is preferable to MP3 for two reasons, the first being its alleged higher quality, and the second being its factually precise royalty free status. How do I make Ogg Vorbis work on my computer?

Easily.
Many media players already have support for .ogg format. A few of the major players do not natively support .ogg however many plugins have been carefully constructed to account for this oversight.

If you are using Windows Media Player one only needs to download and install the illiminable installer to your Program files\Windows Media Player directory and windows media player will play .oggs.

If you are using itunes or quicktime one only needs to download and install the Xiph quicktime plugin, and .ogg will be readable by your itunes and quicktime software

Quinnware.com claim to make a media player which can handle .ogg as well as many other formats which they claim to supply for free. We have not tried it out yet and would be keen for any reports on its functionality.

Aol-Nullsoft Winamp also works as a media player which can read ogg and is free, however one must use the full version and not the lite version as the lite version is not natively installed with .ogg support.

Vorbis.com also has links to other 3rd party media players which they know of who produce devices which will read .ogg

 

 

What about my ipod or portable media player?

After searching using a dialup modem, GGE located some software which will allow people who use ipods, irivers and various other portable media devices, to read .ogg format as well as quite a few other previously unobtainable formats as well.
The software is called Rockbox and is described on their website as an "open source firmware replacement for mp3 players"
The full instructions for usage reside also on the website, and the Rockbox organisation claim no end of added features and functionality to one's media player after installation, full instructions for which are also given on the website as well.
GGE have not tested this software, and would be keen to hear from people who have and what the results were.

 

 

Why exactly are GGE using .ogg?

Although it seems to be an irrelevant issue to most people, the fact of the matter remains that mp3 is fairly contentious with regards to licensing and patent law in such a vast array of areas that we at GGE would much rather prefer to stay out of the whole kettle of worms completely until the disasterous mess has settled down, which is allegedly in about 2012 or so (just in time we hear) when the patent monopoly for all the various components of mp3 is due to wear off. Compared to this .ogg is a celestial joyride offering high quality with small file size and not a single word need be said to anyone about anything.

The folks who own mp3 (and there are a lot of bits of mp3 so there are a lot of folks and they are all really rich) are using it to make money and to this end they charge licensing fees to anybody who sells anything in mp3 format, or who performs a commercial activity using mp3.

Although GGE do not sell anything in mp3 format, the idea of subscriber access could be confused with a commercial venture, and this is the sort of litigious confusion GGE will be much better off doing without.

As an aside, this creates a clear cut defining line between those who are interested in production of audio files as a means to an end, and those who seek a means to an end to produce audio files.
